Meet Treasure Cove Playground

The biggest change is hard to miss. Treasure Cove is a completely new playground with an ocean inspired design that feels right at home in Capitola. More importantly, it was created with accessibility in mind, giving children with different ages, abilities, and needs more opportunities to play together.

There’s plenty to explore, including climbing features, slides, swings, spinners, sensory elements, domes, and an accessible merry-go-round. The colorful rubberized surface throughout the playground was also selected to create a safer and more accessible play environment.

What makes the project even more special is how much of it came directly from the community. County Park Friends organized an 18 month fundraising campaign that brought in more than $1 million from over 1,500 individual donors. That kind of community participation says a lot about how much Jade Street Park means to the people who live here.

More Than Just a New Playground

The playground may be the most visible addition, but the rest of Jade Street Park has been upgraded, too. The Capitola Community Center underwent a substantial renovation focused on bringing an aging facility up to date while making it more accessible, efficient, and functional. Improvements include updated restrooms, customer service areas, accessibility features, and energy efficient upgrades.

The design also incorporates subtle nods to Capitola's coastal identity. Materials and architectural details, including textured concrete, wood accents, and fiber-cement board, were chosen to complement the character of the surrounding coastline and Capitola Wharf.

New patios and pathways help tie the various pieces of the park together, creating a more cohesive space for the community to use and enjoy.

An Investment in Capitola's Future

Altogether, the improvements to the playground, Community Center, restrooms, pathways, and surrounding site represent an investment of more than $10.8 million. Funding came from a combination of community donations, local support, state funding sponsored by Assembly member Dawn Addis, and federal funds. But the significance of the project goes beyond the dollar amount.
